Election Update
The General Election 2002 is over. I want to congratulate and thank, the Hartland Township Election Officials who worked tirelessly on Election Day to make sure that every vote counted. Also a special thank you to Gail from the Community Education Office. Voters do not realize how much work and effort goes into running a successful election. On Election Day, we all arrive at the school (polling place) at 5:30 am and do not clean up and finalize the election results until after 10pm. That makes for a very long day. One minor point that Clerk Ann Ulrich, CMC needs to be explained is the Write-in vote. Voters who write-in names of people who are not legitimate candidates, only waste the time of the Election workers, who must actually analyze each and every write-in ballot to determine if it is a true vote, or should be corrected. In the Treasurer's race, a few write-in votes were cast for an illegitimate candidate, and caused election workers to be delayed in closing the polls, which costs the Township additional money. Rest assured the "computer" knows the difference between an illegitimate candidate and an official candidate. Only the official candidate will be credited with a vote.

Dear Ann,

Q: When will we get some new restaurants in Hartland?

A:
A new restaurant has just arrived. Fire Rock (the new building attached to Striking Bowling Lanes) is a great new addition to the Hartland Restaurant scene. It opened, on Saturday, November 2, 2002, and is already become a favorite with my husband and me. We already have enjoyed many meals at Fire Rock. Fire Rock is a family restaurant, where adults and kids can watch their favorite sporting events (on 20 different TV's) or play Video TV Golf (using real golf clubs) while having a fabulous lunch or dinner. The menu items range from seafood, including lobster, ribs, prime rib, steaks, pizza, homemade nachos/fajitas & burgers. Meals are served with a salad, hot homemade bread and flavored butter.

Q: What is the next step after the Recall of the Supervisor Election?

A:
If the Supervisor is recalled, another election will be scheduled to find a replacement. At that time, one candidate from the Republican Party and one candidate from the Democratic Party will be selected to appear on the Ballot. Any other interested candidates can run as independent candidates for Supervisor. The election will be held within 60 days of the Recall Election. If the Supervisor is not recalled, he will remain in office and complete his term. He cannot be recalled again during the remainder of his term. His term of office ends, November 2004.

Q: How can I find out information and the true facts about Board decisions?

A:
Every decision and motion that the Hartland Township Board makes, is contained in the Township Board Minutes. Minutes become historical documents and therefore are very important to the Township and it's residents. Now it is easy, to find all of the minutes and the information on a public computer in the lobby of the Township Hall. Minutes from 1998-2002 have been scanned into a special new computer program (Lazer-Fishe) that provides easy access through search features. If you have ever used the search feature on a computer you can use Lazer-Fishe. I learned about Laser-Fishe from other Township Clerks and also felt that this was another method to keep our resident's factually informed. Stop into the Township Hall and I will be happy to "coach" anyone through the easy instructions.

Q: When should Township Board Members abstain from voting on a topic in question?

A:
State of Michigan is law is clear: Township Board members "MUST" vote on all items that come before the board, unless the Board member will have a personal financial gain resulting from the decision.

Q: When will a green arrow turn light be installed near Farmer Jacks at Old-23/59

A:
Michigan Department of Transportation (M-dot) controls those decisions and until the M-59 improvement project is completed; in 2004 has no plans to spend any money on alternate improvements. The Hartland Township Board has no say in these matters.

Many of you have asked me to repeat the following question:

Q: How can I find out information about my property?

A:
Now you can get information about your home and property taxes right in the comfort of your own home using your computer and the Internet. Go to web site: bsasoftware.com Select the PDR option on the lower left of the homepage. Then enter the user name: hartland and the Password: township. (Make sure you use lower case letters)

*Reminder to sewer users with water softeners: To avoid fines, please continue to use Potassium Chloride rather than Sodium Chloride (salt).
