Election
Update
Welcome Supervisor Don Rhodes. In a landslide victory on January 14th, Donald
Rhodes became the new Supervisor of Hartland Township. The entire Hartland
Township Board now has the possibility to blossom within an atmosphere of
teamwork with our new leader, whose campaign theme was "Harmony".
I look forward to the chance of working with an experienced leader, and 7
elected Township Officials, committed to working together cooperatively, Ann Ulrich, CMC, Clerkmoving the Township forward, and dealing with the unique
challenges facing Hartland Township relating to intense growth.
Dear Ann,
Q:
If School taxes are getting collected in summer, why are they also on this
Tax Bill?
A: Good question! I decided to let Kathy Horning,
newly Elected Township Treasurer answers this one: The State of Michigan
has decided to collect all their State Education Tax during the summer.
The State Education Tax (SET) taxes we currently owe and will be paying
this winter amounts to 6 mils and covers the period up to October 30, 2003.
The State will then also collect their (SET), during this summer but will
give us a break and charge a reduced amount of 5 mils in order to adjust
for the summer tax change. Next year after the adjustment for changing to
summer taxes has been completed, the (SET) will go back to the original
6 mils. NOTE: After this year, we will no longer be charged State Education
Taxes on the Winter Tax bills. If you have any questions call, Treasurer
Horning at 810-632-7498, ext.19 or 20.
Q:
With the new Schools on Hartland road, will the speed limit be reduced to
25 mph?
A: My source for all questions about roads is The Livingston County
Road Commission or the Livingston Sheriff Department, and both are willing
to answer resident questions. While the Township Board has no jurisdiction
for roads, we work well with the two organizations named above. In regard
to Hartland road, the speed limit is expected to be changed to 25 miles
per hour during school hours. It will however, revert back to the 45 miles
an hour during none school hours.
Q: Does the Township Board plan to raise taxes to
cover services they provide?
A: No! Analysis of your Tax Bill will show that Hartland Township
receives only .837 of a mill. This means that if your home were valued at
$100,000 the taxes you would pay to the Township for an Operating fund,
would be $83.70 for the entire year. The Township Board makes a small amount
of operating money go a long way.
Q: Are there any plans to rebuild or develop the
Boarded Up Oasis property?
A: Residents continue to ask why nothing is being built or why the
building is not being torn down. Currently, nothing in the Township Ordinance
prevents boarding up buildings. Once again, lack of sewers is the hold up
on this redevelopment project. Owner of the Oasis property has an entire
proposed development, which will continue to be kept on hold until sewer
taps are available. As I have reported here, sewer expansion is nearly accomplished.
The sewer and water committee should have positive announcements anticipated
for public information, late March 2003.
Q: Why do you write this column in Community Life?
A: The best source for information about what is going and how your
Tax money is being spent, in your Home Township is received by asking an
elected Official. Many people are busy, and my not have the time to contact
officials by phone. When I worked outside of the Township, I found it difficult
to keep up with the "Facts vs. Rumors" about the Township. When
I was elected I campaigned on a platform of change and information. This
column provides me the opportunity to fulfill a campaign promise as well
as keep our Hartland Residents informed. As you can see below, I have provided
my contact information. This assures that you will always find out the facts
rather than be mislead by gossip and propaganda.
